On the TWU Podcast, we very much love any information that we can get on consciousness!  While there may be a plethora of books on consciousness, none is quite like the new Amazon #1 bestseller, Lord Have Murphy: Waking Up in the Spiritual Marketplace. It’s a funny, commentary that attempts to bring the reader to a new level of consciousness unknown even to many people who have dabbled in meditation, mindfulness and yoga.

Today, we welcome the book’s author Fran Shaw, Ph.D.,  a longtime practitioner in a spiritual discipline and an award-winning university writing instructor. She introduces us to her character Murphy, the star narrator of this journey into this new level of awareness.  Now Murphy has a great sense of humor.  He’s witty and sarcastic, frustrated with the world of self-help, and doesn’t take himself too seriously.

I am, admittedly, a self help junkie!  So when discussing this book with Fran, it was really interesting to hear such a refreshing take on how we go about finding a level of awakening that is unlike most self-help books.  Fran discusses that conventional tools like affirmations and positive thinking, while helpful, never get us to a true awakening.  She explains how changing our thoughts have little to do with achieving a new level of true awareness.  We also discuss how we tend to take ourselves too seriously and lose sight of truly becoming conscious in our everyday actions.
